Summer Decluttering Checklist

Summer is finally here!

Now is the perfect time to take a step back and declutter to prepare for a summer full of fun, festivities, and family!

Below you will find the main items to go through that you can declutter to prepare for the summer season.

  1. Unused or well-loved coolers

We all have those coolers sitting in the garage that NEVER get used, donate them!

  2. Unused or well-loved children’s backpacks

School is OUT! If your child’s backpack has seen better days, it may be time to toss it.

  3. Children’s homework station

Go through pens, markers, crayons and see which items are no longer usable. Organize any paper supplies that they can use for the next school year.

  4. Unused or well-loved flip-flops or sandals

It’s time to free your tootsies! Donate any summer shoes you no longer wear or get rid of ones that have seen better days. A fun reusable option is to use them as garden markers. Write your plant names and put them in the ground so you know which plants are which!

  5. Unused or well-loved sports or outdoor equipment

Donate any sports or outdoor equipment your children have outgrown. Analyze what outdoor equipment actually gets used.

  6. Gardening station

Get your gardening station in order, donate any unneeded gardening tool duplicates.

  7. Unused or broken sunglasses

We all have at least one pair of sunglasses that you cannot even see through! It may be time to declutter the old ones and get a new pair!

  8. Unused or well-loved ball caps or hats

Before you toss a hat that has seen better days… I have brought back ball caps that were on the brink of death with a good soak in hot water, vinegar, dish soap, laundry soap, and borax! Let them sit in the mixture for a few hours, give them a good scrub, and then let them dry out in the sun!

  9. Unused or broken grilling equipment

An anecdote- We were given a hand-me-down grill that was probably as old as we were. It lasted a while, but finally stopped working. We had a hard time getting rid of it with the intention that ‘we can fix that’, well, we never fixed it and it sat outside being unused. We finally decided it was time to get rid of it and got a new grill that we love even more!

  10. Expired travel toiletries

Cosmetics and toiletries EXPIRE! Get rid of any items that you opened last vacation season and get yourself some new travel accessories! I recommend getting refillable bottles that you can put your everyday toiletries into so that you don’t run the risk of them expiring.

  11. Unused or well-loved reusable grocery bags

Analyze which grocery bags are actually used on a normal basis. Get rid of ones that no longer are used.

  12. Unused or broken travel cups and mugs

Do you really need 10 travel cups? Do a deep analysis on any travel cups or mugs that actually get used. To dive further, the next time you see a really pretty travel cup at the store, keep in mind you have some at home!

  13. Old or expired nail polish

I know you have nail polish in your vanity that has not seen the light of day for years! Get rid of old, expired nail polishes that don’t even get used.

  14. Children’s crafting supplies

View this the same as the homework station. Get rid of any crafting supplies that your children no longer use.

  15. Duplicate or damaged umbrellas

Or I can do you one better… do you even use umbrellas? Go through what you have and analyze which ones you actually use.
