Tidy Up Tuesday
This weeks we are focusing on the dreaded JUNK DRAWER!
Here are a couple quick steps to get your junk drawer back in order:
Step 1: Empty It Completely
Start with a clean slate. Take everything out of the drawer and lay it on a table or countertop. This gives you a clear view of what you’re working with, and trust me, there will be surprises!
Step 2: Sort and Declutter
Create piles: keep, toss, relocate, and donate. Be honest here. Do you really need five nearly empty tubes of super glue or three sets of old keys you can’t identify? Let go of the “just in case” mentality for items that clearly serve no purpose anymore.
Keep only what’s useful and used.
Toss anything broken, expired, or unusable.
Relocate items that belong in other areas (like that screwdriver that should live in the toolbox).
Donate items that are in good shape but not useful to you.
Step 3: Clean the Drawer
Before putting anything back, wipe down the drawer with a damp cloth. You’ll probably find dust, crumbs, and a surprising amount of mystery grit. Consider adding a drawer liner for a clean, finished look.
Step 4: Use Organizers
Invest in drawer organizers or repurpose small boxes, muffin tins, or ice cube trays to create sections. The goal is to give every category its own space. Group like items together batteries, tools, office supplies, etc., so you always know where to find what you need.
Step 5: Restock with Intention
Only return items to the drawer that truly belong. Think about the kinds of things you regularly need on hand:
-Scissors
-Tape
-Notepad and pen
-Rubber bands
-Band-aids
-Small tools (like a screwdriver or measuring tape)
-Charging cables or adapters
Keep it simple and functional.
Step 6: Maintain the System
The real key to an organized junk drawer? Routine maintenance!
Every couple of months, do a quick check to keep things from piling up again. A five-minute refresh can save you hours of digging later.
